What it's for
This roofing estimate template is for the roofer or estimator who has measured a roof and needs a price to send.
As in our guide on how to build a construction estimate, cost stays apart from price: overhead and margin go on after the job cost.
Its materials are a shingle roof's, with no lines for metal panels, tile or membrane. For other work, see our construction estimate template.
What's inside
Five sheets, each protected with no password and each printing on one page. Pale yellow cells are yours to fill in, and all other cells are locked.
Measurements. A project block, then 12 ROOF SECTIONS lines, where each section's length, width and pitch give its plan area, pitch factor and roof area. ROOF AREA AND SQUARES gives the Roof squares and, after your Waste allowance, the Squares with waste. LINEAR MEASUREMENTS takes five lengths in feet.
Materials. Seven lines from Shingles to Nails, where you enter COVERAGE and UNIT COST and the QUANTITY rounds up to whole units, plus Ventilation and Flashing, lump sums you type in AMOUNT.
Labor and job. Tear-off, installation, disposal and equipment join the Materials total in the Direct cost. Sales tax on materials, permits, bonds and contingency bring it to the Job cost, overhead to the Total cost, and the Bid price is "Total cost ÷ (1 − margin)".
Tear-off and installation are priced on Roof squares, the roof area ÷ 100, with no waste allowance. Shingles and nails are figured on Squares with waste, underlayment on the area with waste, and the other four materials on the linear measurements as entered.
Quote. The page your client sees, on your letterhead: ROOFING QUOTE, QUOTE NO., DATE and VALID UNTIL, then CLIENT, PROJECT and ADDRESS, six SCOPE OF WORK lines, the Price and signature lines for you and the client.

How to fill it in
- On Measurements, type over or clear the two example sections. A line counts once its name or any figure is filled in.
- Measure LENGTH (FT) and WIDTH (FT) level, as on a plan, not along the slope. The PITCH FACTOR adds the slope. It's geometry: the slope length per foot of run. Enter the pitch as the rise per 12, from 0 to 24: 6 for a 6-in-12 roof. The cell refuses a fraction such as 6/12, so type the rise only. Leave the pitch blank and the section counts as flat: pitch factor 1, roof area equal to plan area.
- Type the Waste allowance as a percent, with the percent sign. The About tab's Step 1 lists every length on this sheet. Eaves with ice and water barrier (ft) doesn't copy from Eaves (ft): type it even when the two match.
- On Materials, enter the coverage printed on each product and your unit cost. Shingles take bundles per square; the other lines take what one unit covers, such as square feet per roll of underlayment. A blank or 0 coverage orders none.
- On Labor and job, clear Tear-off layers when nothing comes off. Installation hours × Installation hourly rate adds to the per-square figure, so to price by the hour, clear Installation rate per square.
- Enter the tax and contingency rates as percents too. A blank line counts as 0. Sales tax applies to the Materials total only, and the file doesn't decide what your state taxes. Replace the example overhead and margin with your own. The margin must be under 100%.
- On the Quote, type over the yellow letterhead. CLIENT and PROJECT don't copy from Measurements, and the Price can't be typed over: change the figures on Labor and job. Send the Quote alone, printed or as a PDF. The workbook holds your costs, overhead and margin.
The worked example
The file opens on an example, and every figure typed into it sits on a line marked "Example:". The About tab calls the 12% overhead and 15% margin the bid price calculator's worked example, and the rest illustrative, not recommendations, norms or typical prices. Use your product's coverage and your own allowance, rates and prices.

Frequently asked questions
Does the file do the math?
Yes. Every calculated figure is a live formula.
Does it work in Google Sheets or Numbers?
Both open .xlsx files. This one has no macros, and its formulas use only IF, AND, ROUND, ROUNDUP, SQRT and SUM.
Can I add more roof sections?
Yes. Unprotect the sheet (there's no password), insert rows between two section lines so the roof area counts them, and copy the three calculated cells into each new row.
Can I put my logo on it?
Yes, on the Quote: insert it where the sheet says YOUR LOGO. That row is 36 pt (half an inch) tall, so a logo sized to it fits without dragging the row taller. To remove the YOUR LOGO text, choose Review > Unprotect Sheet (there is no password), then protect the sheet again.
Is the Quote a contract?
No. It's a quote: a scope, a price and an acceptance block with signature lines. It has no contract terms, and the file doesn't decide yours.
